Yang Lian was born in Switzerland in 1955, and grew up in Beijing. He began writing when he was sent to the countryside in the 1970s. On his return to Beijing he became one of the first group of young ‘underground’ poets, who published the literary magazine Jintian. Yang Lian’s poems became well-known and influential inside and outside of China in the 1980s, especially when his poem ‘Norlang’ was criticized by the Chinese government during the ‘Anti-Spiritual Pollution’ movement.
Yang Lian was invited to visit Australia and New Zealand in 1988 and became a poet in exile after the Tian’anmen massacre. Since that time, he has continued to write and speak out as a highly individual voice in world literature, politics and culture. Yang Lian has published ten selections of poems, two selections of prose and many essays in Chinese. His work has also been translated into more than twenty languages, including English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese and Eastern European languages. His thoughtful and inspired works have been called “one of the most representative voices of Chinese literature”. Yang Lian has been living in London since 1997.
Yang Lian was awarded the Flaiano International Poetry Prize (Italy, 1999) and his book Where the Sea Stands Still: New Poems won the title ‘Poetry Books Society Recommended Translation’ (UK, 1999). His other translations in English including Dead in Exile, a selection of short poems published by Tiananmen Publications (Australia, 1989), Masks and Crocodile, a collection of short poems published by Wild Peony Press (Australia, 1990), Non-person Singular, a collection of short poems published by Wellsweep (UK, 1995),
( the titil is a charater he invented, sound’s Yi, the meaning is heaven and Human are one), a book-length poem published by Green Integer (USA, 2002); Notes of a Blissful Ghost, a selection of poems published by Renditions (Hong Kong, 2002); Concentric Circles, another book-lengh poem published by Bloodaxe Books (UK, 2005); Unreal City, a selection of poems and prose in English translation published by Auckland University Press (New Zealand 2006), and Riding Pisces: Poems From Five Collections, a selected poems published by Shearsman Books, (UK, 2008), and his forthcoming book in English translation is Lee Valley Poems, will be published by Bloodaxe Books, 2009.
Yang Lian and W. N. Herbert are the co-editors of a brand new Anthology of Contemporary Chinese Poetry (1978 -- 2008) in English, the anthology will be published by Bloodaxe Books in 2009.
Yang lian has four books published in Chinese in Taiwan, his three volumes of collected works, Yang Lian Zuo Pin 1982-1997 (2 vols) and Yang Lian Xin Zuo 1998-2002 have eventually been published in China. In 2008, Dark Blue Poems, a collection of erotic poems was published unofficially in China.
Yang Lian have been invited to be the writers in residence by many international institutions, among others are DAAD (Berlin programme), Amherst College, Bard College (USA), Cove Park (UK), MEET (France), University of Sydney (Australia), University of Auckland (New Zealand), he was invited to be a jury of Lettre-Ulysess Award for the art of Reportage (Germany), International contest of Essays (Germany), President of Juries of “The Crystal Vilenica Award, 2008”, as well as been invited to be an adviser of “Free The Word” (International Literature Festival of PEN), International Literature Festival of Berlin, Poetry International Taipei…etc. since 2005, he is the artistic director of “Unique Mother Tongue”, a privately organized international seminar series based on London.
Yang Lian was one of the founders of Independent Chinese PEN Club, the unique and the only organisation of Chinese writers whom live inside and outside of China, he has elected a board member of International PEN during its 74th congress held in Bogota, Colombia, Sep. 2008.
